Questions

GST calculation, answered. Plain answers, with sources above.

What are the GST rates in India now?

Since 22 September 2025 most goods and services are taxed at 5% or 18%, with 40% for a short list of luxury and sin goods. Special rates remain: 3% for gold, silver and jewellery, 1.5% for cut and polished diamonds and 0.25% for rough precious stones. Essentials such as fresh food are nil-rated.

Are 12% and 28% GST still used?

Not for supplies after the 2025 rationalisation. The GST Council moved most 12% items to 5% and most 28% items to 18% from 22 September 2025. Tobacco products stayed at 28% plus compensation cess until 31 January 2026 and moved to 40% from 1 February 2026. The calculator keeps 12% and 28% for checking older invoices.

How do I calculate GST on an amount?

Multiply the amount before GST by the rate and divide by 100. At 18%, GST on ₹10,000 is ₹1,800, and the total is ₹11,800.

How do I remove GST from a price that includes it?

Divide the GST-inclusive price by (100 + rate) and multiply by 100 to get the amount before GST. At 18%, ₹11,800 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹10,000, so the GST is ₹1,800.

When is it CGST and SGST, and when is it IGST?

When the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state, the GST is split equally into CGST and SGST (UTGST in Union territories without a legislature). When they are in different states, or the supply is an import or export, the full rate is charged as IGST.

How is GST rounded?

This calculator rounds each amount to the paisa, half up. On invoices, each tax head is usually worked out and rounded separately, and the invoice total may be rounded to the nearest rupee with a round-off line.
